Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's largest national park and one of the biggest in all of Africa. Covering 20,226 km² of south-central Tanzania's Iringa Region, it is a park of extraordinary scale, wildlife density, and raw wilderness character. For those willing to venture beyond Tanzania's northern circuit, Ruaha delivers an experience that rivals — and in many ways surpasses — anything available further north.

The Great Ruaha River defines the park and gives it its name. During the dry season, this river shrinks to a series of pools and channels that concentrate wildlife to extraordinary densities. Elephant herds of hundreds arrive at the water's edge as the sun sets, lion prides patrol the banks, hippos fill every remaining pool, and crocodiles bask on every sandbar. The river in high dry season is one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in Africa.

Ruaha is also believed to hold approximately 10% of Africa's total lion population — a staggering figure for a single park. Wild dogs, cheetahs, and leopards all thrive here too, making Ruaha a genuine predator paradise far from the crowds of the Serengeti.

Where is Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is located in the Iringa Region of south-central Tanzania, approximately 130 km west of Iringa town and 625 km from Dar es Salaam. The park is accessible by air — with regular scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam taking about 1.5 hours to the Msembe airstrip — or by road via Iringa, a journey of approximately 8–10 hours from Dar.

Most visitors choose to fly. Once in the park, game drives are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles from the various lodges and camps. The park's enormous size means that most visitors experience only the core area around the Great Ruaha River, which contains the highest concentration of wildlife.

What Ruaha Has to Offer

01

The Great Ruaha River

The Great Ruaha River is the lifeblood of the park. During the dry season, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and dozens of other species concentrate along its shrinking banks in extraordinary numbers. In some years, the river dries entirely in places — a sobering reminder of the pressures facing Tanzania's water systems.

02

Tanzania's Lion Capital

Ruaha is believed to hold approximately 10% of Africa's entire lion population. Lion prides are commonly seen and frequently encountered at close range on game drives. The lions here are larger and less habituated to vehicles than in the northern parks, giving encounters a rawer, more authentic edge.

03

A Paradise for Elephant Lovers

Ruaha supports one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa, with thousands of elephants moving through the park's vast miombo woodland and river systems. The sight of a herd of 200 elephants arriving at the river at dusk is among the most powerful experiences in African wildlife.

04

Wild Dogs & Rare Predators

African wild dogs are present and increasingly well-documented in Ruaha. The park also supports healthy populations of cheetah and leopard, making it a premier destination for predator enthusiasts who are willing to go off the beaten tourist trail.

05

The Miombo Wilderness

Unlike the savannah of the northern parks, Ruaha is dominated by vast tracts of miombo woodland — a biome unique to southern and central Africa. This woodland supports specialist species including sable antelope, roan antelope, and endemic miombo birds found nowhere else in Tanzania.

Game Drives Along the Great Ruaha River

Game Drives Along the Great Ruaha River

The Great Ruaha River is the park's main theatre of wildlife action. As the dry season progresses, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, lion prides, and hundreds of other species concentrate along the shrinking river in numbers that are unmatched elsewhere in southern Tanzania. Dawn and dusk drives along the river banks are among the finest wildlife experiences on the African continent.

Walking Safari

Walking Safari

Ruaha is one of Tanzania's premier walking safari destinations. Guided by experienced, armed rangers, walks through the miombo woodland bring visitors into immediate contact with the natural world — reading tracks, identifying plants, and experiencing the full sensory immersion of the African bush at ground level.

Night Drive

Night Drive

After sunset, Ruaha reveals its nocturnal cast. Lions are often heard and sometimes seen hunting, leopards move through the woodland, and smaller nocturnal mammals — servals, civets, spring hares — emerge from their daytime retreats. Night drives with spotlight-equipped vehicles provide a thrilling addition to the daytime game drive.

Fly Camping

Fly Camping

Ruaha is one of the best places in Tanzania for fly camping — spending a night in a remote temporary camp deep in the bush. With the sounds of the African night all around and no permanent structures in sight, fly camping provides an experience of genuine wilderness that is profoundly different from any lodge-based safari.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Ruaha National Park?

Ruaha National Park is located in south-central Tanzania, in the Iringa Region. It is approximately 625 km from Dar es Salaam and about 130 km from Iringa town.

How large is Ruaha National Park?

Ruaha covers 20,226 km², making it Tanzania's largest national park and one of the largest in all of Africa.

What is Ruaha most famous for?

Ruaha is most famous for its massive elephant herds, outstanding lion population (believed to hold ~10% of Africa's total), and the Great Ruaha River. It is also renowned for its wild dog population and the sheer scale of its untouched wilderness.

When is the best time to visit Ruaha?

June to October is the dry season and optimal for wildlife viewing, especially along the Great Ruaha River where wildlife concentrates dramatically. January and February are also excellent for birdwatching and green-season photography.

How do I get to Ruaha?

The fastest way is by scheduled or charter flight from Dar es Salaam, which takes approximately 1.5 hours. By road from Dar via Iringa, the journey takes about 8–10 hours. Most visitors fly in.

Can I combine Ruaha with other parks?

Yes. Ruaha pairs naturally with Nyerere National Park (for boat safaris), Mikumi (road accessible), and can even be combined with the Zanzibar coast for a classic “bush and beach” itinerary.

Are walking safaris available in Ruaha?

Yes. Ruaha is one of Tanzania's best destinations for walking safaris. Many lodges include guided walks and these provide an entirely different dimension to the game drive experience.

What makes Ruaha different from northern Tanzania parks?

Ruaha offers a more remote, wild, and crowd-free experience than Serengeti or Ngorongoro. The miombo woodland ecosystem is completely different from the northern savannah, supporting unique species and providing a landscape that feels genuinely frontier.

Are there hippos in Ruaha?

Yes. The Great Ruaha River supports very large populations of hippos, particularly concentrated as the river shrinks during the dry season. Hippo viewing along the river is excellent.

Is Ruaha suitable for children?

Ruaha can be visited with children of appropriate age (usually 8+ for game drives). Its remote, wild character makes it more suitable for older children and families who appreciate genuine wilderness over amenity.
